OK. The old version (6.6.1) is still running after ~15 hours, and
the status is such:
- 900 consumed CPU minutes (while 6.6.7 finishes in ~40 minutes.)
- Memory footprint is 400M.
- ~280M is memory-resident, the rest has been swapped out (~120M swap
  space in use.)
- vmstat reports zero swapins/swapouts over a 5 minute period, so those
  120M are really not being touched.

So it would appear that it's looping somewhere. It's definitely not
trashing.
