Hi,

Let me tell you how I built/initialized my SOMs. This is one way of doing
it, and may be not be the only way, as I understand.

I used both SOM-PAK (C implementation) and SOM Toolbox (Matlab
implementation) from Helsinki Univ. of Tech. for my work. I used SOM Toolbox
for initialization and visualization purposes and SOM-PAK for the actual
training (it is much faster in C, compared to doing it in Matlab).

The som_lininit function in SOM Toolbox does the automatic generation and
choosing of the SOM dimensions. I believe the som_randinit function also
does this. I used the som_lininit function for my work. You probably want to
read up on som_lininit here :
http://www.cis.hut.fi/projects/somtoolbox/package/docs2/som_lininit.html or
even better, read the som_lininit.m file containing the implementation
written in Matlab language for more information on the actual design/working.

Good luck,
Mani.
